![]() The nightmare of total organization, which I had situated in the seventh century After Ford, has emerged from the safe, remote future and is now awaiting us, just around the next corner. In the rest of the world freedom for individuals has already gone, or is manifestly about to go. But even in those countries that have a tradition of democratic government, this freedom and even the desire for this freedom seem to be on the wane. In the West, it is true, individual men and women still enjoy a large measure of freedom. The blessed interval between too little order and the nightmare of too much has not begun and shows no sign of beginning. The prophecies made in 1931 are coming true much sooner than I thought they would. Twenty-seven years later, in this third quarter of the twentieth century A.D., and long before the end of the first century A.F., I feel a good deal less optimistic than I did when I was writing Brave New World. In the process of passing from one extreme to the other, there would be a long interval, so I imagined, during which the more fortunate third of the human race would make the best of both worlds - the disorderly world of liberalism and the much too orderly Brave New World where perfect efficiency left no room for freedom or personal initiative. Ours was a nightmare of too little order theirs, in the seventh century A.F., of too much. ![]() were the inhabitants, admittedly, of a gruesome kind of universe but the nightmare of those depression years was radically different from the nightmare of the future, described in Brave New World. ![]() We who were living in the second quarter of the twentieth century A.D. I forget the exact date of the events recorded in Brave New World but it was somewhere in the sixth or seventh century A.F. The completely organized society, the scientific caste system, the abolition of free will by methodical conditioning, the servitude made acceptable by regular doses of chemically induced happiness, the orthodoxies drummed in by nightly courses of sleep-teaching - these things were coming all right, but not in my time, not even in the time of my grandchildren. In 1931, when Brave New World was being written, I was convinced that there was still plenty of time. Brave New World Revisited (1958) by Aldous Huxley

![]() However, counting a larger X number can be a pain when we have quite a lot of commits in our branch. We’ve learned that the command git rebase -i HEAD~X is pretty straightforward to squash the last X commits. * cbd350d 23:26:19 +0200 Init commit (Kai Yuan)Īs the slog output shows, we’ve squashed the last four commits into one new commit, f9a9cd5. Now here’s what we’ll see if we check the Git commit log once again: $ git slog Successfully rebased and updated refs/heads/master. If we save the change and exit the editor, Git will do the rebase following our instructions: $ git rebase -i HEAD~4ġ file changed, 1 insertion(+), 1 deletion(-) There’s a detailed guideline on how to control each commit and commit message in the commented lines that follow.įor example, we can change the pick command of commits into s or squash to squash them: So, this is what we should run: git rebase -i HEAD~4Īfter we execute the command, Git will start the system default editor (the Vim editor in this example) with the commits we want to squash and the interactive rebase help information:Īs we can see in the screenshot above, all four commits we want to squash are listed in the editor with the pick command. For example, git push origin +feature will force a push to the feature branch. It’s worth mentioning that force push to a public repository could be a dangerous operation, as it may overwrite others’ commits.įurther, when we really want to do a force push, we should make sure only to force push the required branch.įor example, we can set the fault property to current so that only the current branch will be pushed/force-pushed to the remote repository.Īlternatively, we can force push to only one branch by adding a “+” in front of the refspec to push. Moreover, if we’ve squashed already pushed commits, and we would like to publish the squashed result, we have to do a force push. So, in this case, these are the last four commits: * ac7dd5f. ![]() ![]() It’s worth mentioning that when we say “the last X commits,” we’re talking about the last X commits from the HEAD. ![]() Since screw extractors must burrow into metal screws in order to work, they need to consist of hard metal. Drill bits and extractors made of high-quality steel alloys do a better job of boring into and gripping fasteners and last longer than those that use cheaper materials. The material type also affects gripping power. While the latter generally creates more gripping power, this style of the extractor is limited to instances where the bolt or screw head is jutting out of the material enough to allow the tool to grip it. ![]() ![]() Some drill into the head and use reverse threads to bite into and grip the head while others grab the head by fitting over it. Gripping Powerĭifferent types of screw extractors use different strategies for gripping a stripped or rusted screw or bolt head. While a small kit with four or five extractor sizes is adequate for most, it makes sense for pros or DIYers to invest in a set that can cover a broad range of sizes. Other sets can remove tiny machine screws found in electronics, such as laptop computers with extractors as small as 0.0781 inches. Larger sets have extractors as large as 0.875 inches and are capable of removing large bolts on vehicles and industrial machines. Most sets include sizes ranging from 0.125 inches up to 0.625 inches. Screw heads come in a wide variety of sizes, so it’s important to pay attention to what sizes the screw extractor can accommodate. Attach the end to a 0.375-inch or 0.500-inch ratchet and turn counterclockwise to remove the bolt or screw. To use an extractor tool, place it over the head of the stud or bolt, then tighten the grip around it like a vice. Like extraction pliers, it only works with screws or bolts that are sticking out of the material. ![]() Stud and bolt extractor tool: This tool looks similar to the chuck of a power drill. This set of specialty pliers has teeth designed to grip firmly onto the head, allowing the user to remove the screw by attaching the pliers and turning them counterclockwise. Extraction pliers: Extraction pliers are a good option for damaged screws or bolts whose heads are protruding from the surface of the material. Some are double-sided, with a drill bit on one side and an extractor on the other. Many spiral screw extractor kits come with matching drill bits. The extractor has reverse threads that grip the screw as it rotates inside the hole counterclockwise. Spiral screw extractor: A spiral screw extractor removes screws or bolts by fitting them into a hole that’s been drilled into the fastener’s head with a drill bit.The threads typically have a spiral pattern that becomes tighter with force. These threads bite into the bolt head as the user turns the socket counterclockwise using a socket wrench. There are many types and brands of screw extractors on the market, but few have the mettle to do the job properly. These handy devices consist of a drill bit that grinds a hole into the head of a screw and a threaded extractor that bites into this hole, gripping the screw so that the user can remove it with a drill or ratchet. A good screw extractor can make quick work of damaged screws. The good news is that there is a solution to this frustrating issue: a screw extractor. This frustrating issue can leave one digging through their collection of tools in vain, searching for a way to remove the offending fastener. Few things can bring a building project or repair effort to a grinding halt like a stripped screw or bolt. ![]() I want to create music, not spend my time debugging hardware, software, compatibility for companies who care mostly about the $$$$. I’m pleased to see MindNode 6’s progress but it wasn’t enough for an iThoughts user (me) to move the needle.Every great idea starts with a single thought. iThoughts has a different user interface but I’ve quickly learned many of the keyboard shortcuts and can cut through quickly. IThoughts also has a Window version available for those who need mind mapping over on The Dark Side.Īs The Sweet Setup shows, Mindnode 6 is the current media darling and is getting the spotlight as the shiny new toy. To see some of the updates that have been added over the years, check here. I’m glad to see focus finally on MindNode 6 now. For example, MindNode 6 finally has a focus feature. They seemed to be ahead of MindNode when it came to adding features. I clicked through to older posts going to years back to see what they’ve added. Just going through their blog and seeing what they’ve announced over the years has shown that they’ve been actively developing it for years now. The iThoughts folks have been busy as well. I haven’t found anything in MindNode 6 that makes me want to switch from iThoughts. But it might be overwhelming for someone who just wants an easy to use task manager. But a power user will appreciate OmniFocus 3. In the same light, Things 3 is a very capable app and is probably the easy choice for many users. iThoughts has more power and features that many users might not care about. Things 3 has a beautiful interface and will feel comfortable for users who bought into that ecosystem. I feel this is like the Things 3 vs OmniFocus 3 argument. iThoughts has more features that might not mean much to others. If you’re looking for basic mind map features, go with either one. iThoughts has a slideshow mode if you want to do presentations as well. iThoughts has some project management features such as cost and effort analysis, task progress (not started, 10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, done) that separates itself from MindNode. Something like export to OmniFocus and Quick Entry screen gives the nod to MindNode. The only remaining things that differentiate between the two apps are special case scenarios. Most of the basic mind map features are there. I did download MindNode 6 and have been running it through for a couple of days now. iThoughts was further along the road and MindNode was just a babe in the woods at version 2.Īn aggressive development schedule has moved MindNode much closer to iThoughts in terms of having the main features in a mind map. I was faced with this choice a few years ago. iThoughts has the ability to work special categories of notes such as tasks with due-dates, resources (people in orgs), cost calculating nodes, and project progress (for nodes that have tasks).Īnyone else have experience with these two and if so, any thoughts on how they compare? I’d heard a lot of good things about MindNode and expected that after I tried it I’d be inclined to purchase but after my initial exploration I’m actually thinking I’d be better off sticking with iThoughts. An example, the project I’m mapping is a collaborative local history project which includes several small non-profits, various resources being digitized, a podcast and a website where the materials will be catalogued. With iThoughts there was more to learn and more that I could do. After an hour of using them I felt like I’d gotten a solid handle on how they each work (very similar) but also had the sense that I’d reached the limit of MindNode’s feature set. It’s got support for markdown in the notes for nodes, the ability to import a greater variety of objects, and far more export/sharing options. Also, two finger tap to undo is a nice touch and a feature I’m coming to like thanks to Procreate and the Affinity apps.īut iThoughts seems to be the more capable app. It’s also got newly announced support for second, external USB C monitors which might be nice for some. MindNode is better in the area of visual style with a couple of added features. ![]() I spent an hour with each app and came away with the impression that iThoughts is a more powerful app in almost every way. Yesterday I saw the new version of MindNode was released so I downloaded it for the free 2 week trial. As it happens I’ve got a new project coming up that would probably benefit from actually diving in with this kind of app. I’d previously purchased iThoughts and used it a little but my projects don’t often require that kind of app. ![]() I learned about Node-RED a little while ago from a Hacker News thread, and it’s been on my target ever since. ![]() In contrast Node-RED can run on a Raspberry Pi with less than 2GB RAM. Even though DigitalOcean uses KVM, that’s just way too much for my taste. For comparison, a Droplet with 2GB RAM on DigitalOcean would cost $240/year. I then paid for a $65/year OpenVZ VM that had 6GB RAM and that’s what I ended up using for Huginn for the past year. It didn’t have enough resources to run Huginn well. Initially I used a $30/year OpenVZ VM that I found through LowEndTalk. The 2GB recommended configuration is more expensive than I’d like. That said, its main downside for me is its hefty requirements to run it well. It’s an awesome open-source software and I love it. I don’t want to take anything away from Huginn. I use Huginn and Node-RED to periodically retrieve the text and split it up into RSS feed entries. Another example of where I do this is the Asuswrt-Merlin Changelog. Huginn and Node-RED allows me to automate the filtering process and automate the steps needed to take a data source that doesn’t have RSS feed and produce one. I also apply additional filters on top of the Twitter feed, which is where Huginn and Node-RED comes in. It’s a much better way to read Twitter in my opinion. For example, Twitter doesn’t provide a RSS feed, so I wrote some code that runs on AppEngine and converts tweets into a RSS feed. In order to read everything via RSS feeds, either the news source needs to provide the RSS feed or I need to produce the RSS feed myself. Once my BazQux subscription runs out, I’m probably going to investigate self-host options again. Other options I’ve used in the past include Newsblur, and self-host options such as Miniflux and Coldsweat. RSS allows me to have a superior reading experience, and the synchronization feature of the app on my phone allows me to read offline during my commute.Ĭurrently the service I use for synchronization is BazQux. This post will highlight the nodes I coded for Node-RED to work it for my purpose, but first a little bit of background.Īlmost every news update I read is through RSS feeds synchronized to my phone. So far it’s working out well and I’m loving the new setup. This week I swapped out Huginn and started using Node-RED instead. I was using Huginn for about a year for the purpose of ingesting data and outputting RSS feeds. Node-RED is another similar open-source software but it’s aimed more at IoT applications.
